VPN for selected home devices

Send the TV or console through your own VPN. Everything else stays as it is.

Coming soon to HomeControl: route selected TVs, consoles and other home devices through a VPN service you already use, while every other device keeps its usual connection.

This is a preview. The software is built but switched off and cannot be enabled yet. It stays off until it has been validated on real supported router hardware and firmware (Brume 2 with the FamilyAtlas plug-in), which has not happened yet. FamilyAtlas itself is not publicly available yet.

Why families may want it

Choose the screens. Leave the rest of the home as it is.

Only the devices you choose

Select the living-room TV, a games console or another home device. Phones, laptops and anything you do not select keep the normal home connection.

Your provider, your account

Use a VPN subscription you already have. FamilyAtlas does not sell VPN service, sign in to your provider account or choose servers for you.

Family routines in the same app

Selected devices stay in HomeControl next to pause, schedules and filtering. Whether these rules keep working on the VPN path still requires real-router validation.

Planned setup

Three steps: provider, import, devices.

  1. 01

    Choose your provider

Pick one of ten provider presets or Custom. Each preset shows the manual configuration types it accepts and links to that provider’s own setup guide.

  2. 02

    Import the configuration

Upload the WireGuard (.conf) or OpenVPN (.ovpn) file from your provider account, with any certificate files it names. Pasting the text, or entering WireGuard fields by hand, are alternatives.

  3. 03

    Choose devices

Select the TVs, consoles or other home devices that should use the VPN, and choose what each should do if the VPN is down.

WireGuard .confOpenVPN .ovpn+ certificate files when the provider requires them

One active VPN connection per home in this first version. OpenVPN sign-in details are asked for separately, and only when the file needs them.

Provider presets

Ten presets, plus Custom.

Presets make setup easier for services many families already use. They are not a popularity ranking, an endorsement or a partnership, and no provider has been tested on our router hardware yet. Your provider subscription and its manual router configuration are separate from FamilyAtlas: check that your plan offers it.

Manual configuration types each preset accepts in this first version. Providers can change what they offer.

Custom accepts another compatible WireGuard or OpenVPN configuration, with no claim that a particular provider works.

This first version does not support IKEv2/IPsec, L2TP, PPTP, NordLynx or Lightway. Import supported WireGuard or OpenVPN files.

What to know before you start

If the VPN stops working. The plan is that you choose, for each selected device, between no internet and going back to the normal connection. This behavior still requires real-router validation, so treat it as a preview, not a guarantee.

  • No leak-free promise. A router restart or firewall reload may let selected devices use the usual connection. The behavior and duration still require real-router validation.
  • “Connected” will mean the router’s own check went through the VPN. It does not prove the path of every device.
  • A VPN changes the route a device’s traffic takes. On its own, it does not make a device, an account or your home safe.
  • HomeControl only covers devices on the home network that goes through the Brume 2.

Keep your configuration private. VPN configuration files contain private keys. FamilyAtlas is designed to store them encrypted and send them only to your own paired router. Do not share them in emails, chats or screenshots, including with FamilyAtlas support.

What you will need. A Brume 2 with the FamilyAtlas plug-in, the Family + Home plan, and a VPN subscription that offers manual WireGuard or OpenVPN configuration.

Good questions

Can I turn it on today?

No. This is a coming-soon preview. The software is built but switched off, awaiting real-device validation on supported router hardware and firmware. FamilyAtlas itself is not publicly available yet.

Do I need a particular VPN provider?

No. Ten presets cover widely used services, and Custom accepts other compatible WireGuard or OpenVPN files. A preset does not mean the provider has been tested with HomeControl or that FamilyAtlas recommends it.

Will my child’s phone use the VPN too?

Only if you select it. Devices you do not select keep the usual connection, and HomeControl rules do not follow a phone away from home Wi-Fi.
