Check Family Sharing, who is authorized to approve and the Apple Accounts used for purchases before changing the child’s device. Ask to Buy is a purchase-approval workflow, not the same as blocking purchases entirely. A request that was never created cannot be fixed by changing the parent’s notification sound.
Apple’s troubleshooting guide focuses on current software, family settings, matching purchase accounts and notification delivery. Requests can be handled on supported Apple devices; an Android phone or Windows computer is not a substitute approval device. Check the parent’s other signed-in Apple devices and Messages, rather than assuming the request belongs on one particular phone. If purchases are prohibited separately, review that restriction deliberately. Do not disable protections broadly or use undocumented forum fixes such as renaming a device. Work through the account and delivery checks below, then ask Apple for help with a repeatable failure.

The parent concern
The child may be waiting for approval while the parent sees nothing. Identify whether the request was created and where Apple can deliver it.
Confirm that Ask to Buy is enabled for this child
On iPhone or iPad, check Settings > Family > child > Ask to Buy. Confirm the organizer or designated parent/guardian is the approver. Eligibility and defaults depend on age and region; do not assume the same toggle is optional for every child everywhere. A complete purchase ban is a different control and may prevent reaching a request.

Compare the purchase account and family account
Follow Apple’s check for the Apple Account used for purchases and the account in Family Sharing. On the parent’s device, inspect Settings > Family and Purchase Sharing. A purchase account belonging to someone outside that family is not fixed by restarting Messages. Review the intended child account too.
Check Messages, Contacts and Focus
Apple asks parents to check notifications and whether Focus allows time-sensitive notifications. Its current guide also requires the parent’s correct Apple Account email address or phone number in the child’s contact card so requests can reach Messages. Check Messages on the parent’s iPhone, iPad or Mac and inspect other signed-in Apple devices.
Use a supported approval device
Ask to Buy approvals are an Apple family workflow. A parent who uses only Android or Windows needs a supported Apple approval device and family role; installing an unrelated parental-control app does not create that role. Update the participating Apple devices following Apple’s guidance, then try an appropriate request with the child.

If it still fails, collect the useful details
Record which child requested what, which account is used for purchases, device versions, family roles and whether a request appears in Messages anywhere. Keep account details private. Ask Apple support about the specific failure; do not remove the child from the family or reset the device as a first response.

What you can do right now
- Check the child’s Ask to Buy setting.
- Confirm the approver’s family role.
- Compare purchase and family accounts.
- Check Messages, Contacts and Focus.
- Test on a supported Apple device.
A way to start the conversation
“Show me whether the request was sent. We will check the purchase rule and the receiving account together.”
A suggested script to adapt, not a clinical intervention.
What technology cannot solve
FamilyAtlas cannot receive or approve Apple Ask to Buy requests. Purchase approval and a complete purchasing ban serve different purposes.
Questions parents ask
Can I approve it on Android or Windows?
Apple documents approval through supported Apple devices; those other devices are not equivalent Ask to Buy approvers.
Should I turn off purchase restrictions?
First establish which restriction prevents the request. Change only the intended rule, with the family’s agreement.
Should we rename the phone?
That is not a fix established by the current Apple guidance used here. Start with accounts, roles and delivery.
