Reddit’s suitability depends on the communities, contact settings and the teen’s actual account protections, not a single site-wide safety label. Reddit now describes global teen-account protections, including restrictions on mature content and protective social defaults. Those defaults differ between ages 13–15 and 16–17, and regional age-assurance rules can change the experience further.
Start with the real-age account, a few chosen communities and a review of chat and discoverability. Do not describe the announced iOS parental approval request as a feature already available everywhere: Reddit currently labels it coming soon. Community moderators and platform rules can help, but neither guarantees that every post or private interaction is suitable. Discuss how to leave a hostile community and report contact without moving the conversation elsewhere. A pseudonymous account can protect some privacy while still revealing identity through what the teen posts over time.

The parent concern
Old Reddit guidance misses newer teen protections, while new announcements can be mistaken for controls parents can already use.
Use the current teen protections
Reddit says under-18 accounts cannot access mature or NSFW communities and content and receive protective social defaults. These are provider protections, not proof that mislabelled or harmful material cannot appear. Check the actual account and regional instructions rather than relying on an old tutorial about simply turning an NSFW toggle off.

Chat settings differ by teen age
For ages 13–15, Reddit describes certain chat and follower settings as locked privately. Ages 16–17 begin with protective settings but can change some of them. Its iOS parental approval workflow for younger teens is explicitly coming soon in the current documentation. Do not promise parents that they can already administer it everywhere.

Choose communities by their behavior
Read the community rules and recent discussions together. Ask whether moderation is active, replies are constructive and personal disclosures are encouraged. Avoid treating a wholesome topic name as a guarantee; the tone and moderation matter. This is a practical review method, not an independent rating of every subreddit.
Limit identifying details in posts
Review profile text, school references, repeated location clues and images that reveal personal details. Do not assume a pseudonym makes all posts anonymous or that deletion retracts every copy. Discuss privacy as a habit the teen can practice rather than evidence that they should have no space of their own.

Give the teen permission to leave
If a community or contact turns threatening or sexual, the teen can leave, block and report. They do not have to win an argument first. If someone demands off-platform private contact or images, use official unsafe-contact guidance. Do not promise that blocking one account identifies or stops every person behind it.

What you can do right now

- Review current chat and discoverability protections.
- Choose a small set of well-moderated communities.
- Remove unnecessary identifying profile details.
- Practice leaving, blocking and reporting unsafe contact.
A way to start the conversation
“Show me the communities you enjoy. We can protect your privacy and agree what to do when a conversation becomes uncomfortable.”
A suggested script to adapt, not a clinical intervention.
What technology cannot solve
Age protections, NSFW gating and community moderation are not guarantees about every post or contact. Announced parental features should not be treated as universally available.
Questions parents ask
Can an under-18 account access NSFW communities?
Reddit’s current teen policy says no; do not treat that rule as perfect detection of every harmful post.
Can all teens change their chat settings?
Reddit distinguishes locked protections for ages 13–15 from changeable protective defaults for ages 16–17.
Is the iOS parent approval feature already live everywhere?
The current official page labels that workflow coming soon.
