An ordinary game conversation is not automatically grooming. Respond to the behavior: personal questions, pressure to keep secrets, sexual requests, gifts tied to favors or a meeting request deserve more attention than a routine discussion about a match. Ask calmly what happened, help your child stop unwanted contact and use platform reporting. Epic’s safety tools can reduce particular contact routes; they cannot verify a stranger’s identity or make every interaction safe. If there are threats, sexual exploitation or immediate danger, use the appropriate safeguarding authority rather than treating it as only a settings problem.
The parent concern
A child may hear an unfamiliar player even when a parent chose an audience that sounded restricted. Read the actual audience and platform boundaries.
Read Epic’s chat audience literally
Epic’s current audiences include Everybody; Friends, team members, & connections; Friends Only; and Nobody. Connections can be linked through friends, and teams can be large. Current maximums are Friends Only below 10, and Friends/team members/connections below 13. Review both voice and text, not just the setting the child last showed you.
Review friend requests and Cabined Accounts
In the child’s Epic account parental controls, consider requiring the parent PIN for Epic friend requests. That does not govern a console’s separate friend system. Cabined Accounts restrict features such as voice until guardian consent; approving consent is not a reason to stop reviewing the resulting settings.
Check console chat and voice reporting
Epic says console/platform chat may remain usable when in-game chat is disabled. Review Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo settings separately. Fortnite voice reporting is always on below 18; it records a rolling local window and submits reportable audio when a violation is reported, not a continuous parent listening feed.

Respond to the contact, not just the stranger label
Ask what was requested and whether the child felt pressured. Encourage them not to share their school, address, passwords, codes or private photos. Stop unwanted contact, block/report and review other accounts if the conversation moved elsewhere. Sexual requests or incentives for secrecy require safeguarding help.
