Confirm age and linked-parent controls
OpenAI requires parental consent for 13–18-year-olds and says under-13 educational interaction must be adult-conducted. Eligible linked controls are in ChatGPT Settings > Parental controls. They do not provide parents a view of chat history or real-time monitoring. Study Hours applies Study Mode during chosen times; Quiet Hours blocks access during chosen times.

Review training separately from storage
Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone governs use of new chats for model training. Turning it off does not delete chat history. OpenAI also explains that feedback may allow the associated conversation to be used for training even after opting out. Avoid sensitive prompts regardless of the setting.
Make help visible and test understanding
OpenAI’s August 2026 teen experience includes Study Mode and homework reminders. These are learning supports, not guarantees. OpenAI warns that confident answers can contain fabricated facts or citations.
Our suggested prompt: “Ask me one question at a time about this concept; don’t write my submission.” Afterward, have the child explain the idea without the chat. Open cited sources and check that they actually support the answer.

Ask the school before submitting
Ask which tools, assignments and types of assistance are allowed and whether disclosure is required. Use the teacher’s policy, not the chatbot’s claim that the use is acceptable. Save the child’s own working process where appropriate.
If the exercise involves personal experience or a classmate’s work, do not paste that material into an AI tool. Use a made-up example that tests the same skill.
